Espinoza: New Law Allows School Board Members to Volunteer to Lead Student Organizations

LANSING – A plan proposed by State Representative John Espinoza (D-Croswell) that will allow a school board member to be appointed as a volunteer coach or head of a student organization today passed the Michigan House of Representatives with overwhelming support. The bill passed 103-1.

"With schools facing tough economic times, we must utilize every resource we have," Espinoza said. "We want our students get the most of their school experience, so we shouldn't deny volunteers the opportunity to pitch in. There is a wealth of untapped talent that our school board members have to offer, and we must use that talent to the benefit our students. This is a positive change for our schools."

Under the plan:

  • A school board member can volunteer as a coach or head of a student organization.
  • A school board member serving as a volunteer coach or supervisor will receive no compensation for his or her service.
  • During the period he or she serves as a volunteer, a school board member must abstain from voting on issues before the board concerning that program.

"Extra-curricular activities enhance our children's education," Espinoza said. "Ensuring that every child has the opportunity to play a sport or perform in a school play is the right thing to do for our children. This plan will make sure that our students have every opportunity to grow, learn and develop new skills."
