LANSING – State Representative John Espinoza (D-Croswell) today was named Chair of the House Appropriations Agriculture sub-committee for the 94th Legislature.
"Agriculture is a driving force in our economy here in the Thumb," Espinoza said. "With increased investment in alternative fuels, like ethanol and biodiesel, the agricultural sector of Michigan stands to grow even stronger. Our farmers will have a larger market for their corn and soybeans, which means more money will be spent in our local businesses. It's a win-win for Sanilac and St. Clair counties."
The top priorities for Espinoza and his colleagues in the House include:
- Creating and protecting good-paying jobs.
- Fighting the skyrocketing cost of health care.
- Addressing Michigan's energy needs.
- Strengthening schools and opening the doors of educational opportunities for all citizens.
- Protecting Michigan's Great Lakes, and fighting Canadian and out-of-state trash.
- Strengthening consumer protections.
- Restoring integrity to the House by beefing up ethics standards.
"During tough economic times, agriculture has been our mainstay here in the Thumb," Espinoza said. "In Michigan, the future is bright for agriculture. In fact, it's the only sector that is growing, and I will work to ensure that it keeps growing."
Espinoza also will serve on the House Appropriations subcommittees on Environmental Quality and the State Police.
