Espinoza Encourages Residents to Participate in Watershed Project

Project seeks input on the best management practices for Black River Watershed

LANSING – State Representative John Espinoza (D-Croswell) today encouraged residents to participate in the Black River Watershed Planning Project and give their input for a new management plan for the entire watershed.

"Michigan's water quality is one of our most important issues – it affects everyone," Espinoza said. "I supported the legislation to fund this project and I hope residents give their input. The Black River Watershed is so important to our way of life. We need to constantly look for ways to manage the watershed that also protects our residents and resources."

The project came about when the Sanilac Conservation District received a grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality in 2008. The two-year grant is intended to facilitate the writing of a management plan for the Black River Watershed. The primary goal of the project is to develop a coordinated and comprehensive plan that addresses the Lower Black River, Upper Black River and Mill Creek sub-watersheds and satisfies clean water requirements.

The master plan is intended to be a useful planning document for local governmental units in developing the best management practices and projects to address issues related to water quality such as erosion and runoff.

The Black River Watershed encompasses 718 square miles covering portions of Lapeer, St. Clair and Sanilac counties.

"Agriculture is part of major part of Michigan's heritage," Espinoza said. "With agriculture being one of Michigan's biggest industries, we need to be sure we manage this wonderful resource effectively and continue the Thumb's farming legacy. Clean water is a compelling reason to join in the management planning."

If you would like to get involved with this project or receive notices of public meetings, please call Joe Kautz of the Sanilac Conservation District at (810) 648-2116, ext. 116, or e-mail joe.kautz@mi.nacdnet.net.
