Espinoza Announces Funds for Sanilac Worker Training

No Worker Left Behind funding will help displaced workers land good-paying jobs

LANSING – State Representative John Espinoza (D-Croswell) today announced that Thumb Area Michigan Works has been awarded $100,000 in federal money to provide training for workers in Sanilac County and surrounding areas so they can upgrade their skills and obtain jobs in high-demand fields.

"By providing the training that our workers need to compete in today's global economy, we can make sure they qualify for the good-paying jobs that are being created right now in the Thumb," Espinoza said. "No Worker Left Behind is a solid program that gives our workers the knowledge and the skills that employers require. With this additional money, we can serve more workers and get them back on their feet financially."

The state has awarded $100,000 in federal Workforce Investment Act money through the No Worker Left Behind initiative, which will be used to serve job seekers in Sanilac, Huron, Tuscola, and Lapeer counties. The money will be administered through Thumb Area Michigan Works Employment Training Consortium, the local Michigan Works Agency.

The No Worker Left Behind program provides up to two years of free tuition at any Michigan community college, university or other approved training program for qualifying participants. The program has helped workers find good-paying jobs in high-demand occupations and emerging industries. In addition, Thumb Area Michigan Works will provide employment and training services and job search assistance.

"I want to make sure we give our workers the tools they need to succeed, while also working hard to meet our greatest need, which is creating good-paying jobs and attracting more top-notch employers to Michigan right now," Espinoza said. "It is imperative that we invest in our workers so that we can keep our families, our communities and our businesses strong as we work to turn Michigan around."

Thumb Area Michigan Works can be reached at www.thumbworks.org or by calling (810) 648-5800 in Sanilac County.
